Challenge Accepted ONLINE 6-Week Course - 3 PM
This online class will be held at 3 pm Mountain on Thursdays from Oct. 9th to Nov. 13.
Designed for ages 12–18. No other restrictions—parents know best whether their child is ready. Expect frank discussions on moral, political, and societal issues.
Featuring Kathy Mellor
Beloved LEMI mentor and trainer Kathy Mellor is coming out of retirement to lead this course. Drawing on decades of mentoring youth and coaching parents, Kathy brings clear frameworks, practical tools, and a calm, courageous model for tackling hard conversations at home and in class.
A Class for Youth. A Training for Adults.
Challenge Accepted is a dynamic, mentor-led course where youth practice how to defend their beliefs with confidence, clarity, and respect. Through real-time mentoring, they’ll learn to spot logical fallacies, avoid cognitive distortions, build strong arguments, use story for persuasion, and ask questions that humanize an “opponent.”
But this class isn’t just for youth. It’s also a mentoring masterclass for parents and educators.
How It Works
Youth participate directly.
They’ll practice, interact, and be guided by a mentor who models calm confidence, respectful dialogue, and sound reasoning.Parents attend alongside their students. (Required)
You won’t just “sit in the back.” You’ll watch a mentor in action—learning by example how to guide your own children through hard questions. After the youth portion, you’ll join a debrief + Q&A designed just for parents and mentors, equipping you to bring these tools into your home.
(Spouses are free, because this is meant to strengthen families and their ability to discuss hard topics.)Educators and mentors are invited too.
Even if you’re not bringing youth, you’re welcome to attend. You’ll see the mentoring model in practice, then gain practical strategies in the debrief to bring into your classroom or community.Every family/mentor receives a Guidebook.
This isn’t just a summary of the course—it’s a resource that goes beyond what we can cover in six weeks. Inside, you’ll find additional teaching content, discussion questions, and fun and engaging activities designed to help you keep applying and expanding these skills at home or in the classroom long after the course ends.Stay connected with the BAND group.
Throughout the course, you’ll have access to a private BAND group where we’ll share additional resources, answer questions, post suggested homework, and keep the conversation going between sessions.
Schedule & Format
Each class session will last about 2 hours:
First Hour: The focus is on the youth. Adults are asked to simply observe during this time and not ask questions, so the mentor can work directly with the students.
Youth Debrief: A short wrap-up with the youth immediately follows their session.
Parent/Educator Debrief & Q&A: Afterward, parents and educators will have their own debrief and Q&A time to process what they’ve seen and learn how to apply the same mentoring strategies at home or in the classroom.
Please plan for a full 2-hour block each week.
What You’ll Learn
Spot the most common logical fallacies and cognitive distortions
Formulate good arguments that stand up under pressure
Use storytelling to make ideas memorable and persuasive
Ask questions that draw out others and affirm their humanity
Compare intersectionality vs. meritocracy thoughtfully and respectfully
What You’ll Feel
Youth: Confident in defending your beliefs with humility and respect
Parents & Educators: Equipped to mentor with integrity, clarity, and compassion
What You’ll Do
Youth: Practice receiving questions with humility and responding with clear, sound reasoning
Parents & Educators: Learn by apprenticeship—watch the mentor in action, then carry those practices into your own homes, classrooms, and communities
Why This Format Matters
Most classes stop at content. Challenge Accepted goes further—by pairing youth practice with adult modeling and training. This ensures the lessons don’t just stay in the classroom but ripple into families, schools, and communities.
When you register a youth, you’re signing up for both their growth and your own.
When you attend as an educator, you’re getting a live demonstration + tools you can immediately use.
Important Note for Parents
Because this course is designed as both a youth experience and a mentoring model for adults, a parent (or guardian) is required to attend with every youth participant.
This ensures you not only see your child grow in confidence, but you also learn how to guide and support them at home.
⚠️ Please note: If a youth is registered without a parent, the order will be cancelled.
(Spouses attend free—we encourage both parents to come when possible!)
